Dementia Friendly Abergele Update

It’s been a busy and inspiring few months for Dementia Friendly Abergele!

Huge thanks to Tesco for the £1,000 donation from their community book sales, which will help us continue our vital work in raising dementia awareness locally.

Our World Alzheimer’s Day Walk for Dementia on 21st September was another heartwarming success, with great community participation.

The Monthly Memory Café at Yr Hen Ysgol continues to grow, offering a friendly and supportive space for people living with dementia and their carers.

Dementia Friends has also had a revamp, with two successful Information Sessions recently held at Y Gwindy and The Autumn Club (which meets every Friday 10–12pm at Abergele Old People’s Club). Find out more at dementiafriends.org.uk

We’re also proud to now be listed on www.Dewis.Wales – a one-stop shop for well-being in Wales.

Coming up:

  • Memory Café – Tues 18th Nov, 10-12pm
  • Memory Café Christmas Event with Beulah Brass – Tues 9th Dec 10-1pm
  • Memory Café – Tues 20th Jan, 10-12pm

Dear Friends,

A heartfelt thank you to everyone who joined us for the Walk for Dementia on World Alzheimer’s Day. Together, we raised £300 – a fantastic achievement, especially with our new location, route, and time, which we know may have caused some confusion or limited some walkers from previous years.

We are so grateful to everyone who showed up, walked, supported, and made the day so special.

A few very special thank-yous:

  • To Lady Mayor Tracey Brennan for opening the event — and rolling up her sleeves with refreshments!
  • To Tesco Abergele for kindly donating those refreshments.
  • To Yr Hen Ysgol, which proved to be a brilliant venue.
  • To Abergele TV’s George Frost and Carl Bishop, who captured the event beautifully and shared it on YouTube (view below).
  • To Abergele Rotary, who generously volunteered to steward the walk.

Most of all — thank you to our community for coming out and showing such kindness, solidarity, and support.

The Town Council has recently introduced dementia-friendly mats in the entryways as part of its commitment to creating a more inclusive environment. These specially designed mats aim to support individuals living with dementia by helping to create clearer, more navigable spaces. This initiative reflects our ongoing efforts to promote accessibility and wellbeing for all residents.

CONGRATULATIONS to Abergele Town Council - Offical Affiliate of DFA (Renewal)

Last Thursday, Chairman David Gozzard and DF Ambassador Mel Gizzi presented Mayor Cllr Diane Green with a Certificate of Recognition at the main chambers.

Abergele Town Council has been engaged with DFA since the Steering Group's inception, with three councillors actively participating in monthly meetings, contributing valuable local knowledge and ideas. Thank you to Cllr Alan Hunter, Cllr Shirley Jones-Roberts and Cllr Ann Williamson.

All council members are Dementia Friends, with some refreshing their training annually. The Mayor or Deputy Mayor consistently attends our public events, boosting awareness of our initiatives.

We appreciate the opportunity to share DFA communications in the quarterly newsletter distributed in Abergele.

An exciting development is the town’s new online directory QR Boxx, which showcases organisations and displays 'Dementia Friendly' and 'Safe Spaces' in the town for easier identification.

We look forward to the planned enhancements to the Town Hall to create a more dementia-friendly environment, starting with replacing the black mat.

Thank you for being part of DFA! The Town Council's involvement greatly benefits the community and amplifies our message.
